I’ve found from my years buying pianos that my customers find much more ease in our purchasing process after they get to know me a bit, and have gathered some of understanding of what my business is, and how it operates. Simply put, “Aaron Buys Pianos is a business focused on sourcing and purchasing quality pianos to refurbish, rebuild or restore to like new showroom condition. In sourcing these pianos, we hope to provide our sellers a sense of ease knowing that they are being paid a fair wholesale price that is representative of the current market, and that their piano will be brought to pristine condition, providing years of enjoyment to the new owner.”
I started in this business at 18 years old. There was a piano store that sat on Tejon street in downtown Colorado Springs just two blocks away from the high school I had just graduated from. I had walked by this store hundreds of times, in each passing I'd slow down a bit to admire the beautiful instruments just on the other side of the glass. Eventually I mussened enough courage to actually walk in. Upon entering the shop I was immediately hit with the scent of wood.It smelled amazing. With my hands in my pockets, navigating through the maze of upright and grand pianos, I eventually caught a glimpse of the workshop area of the store and was greeted by the owner. In this workshop, there were three pianos in various stages of disassembly and repair. I had no idea what the internal mechanisms of a pianos looked like, and was in awe of how impressively intricate they were. Somehow through some clumsy conversation on my part I managed to ask whether or not the shop owner needed any help working on things from time to time. To my surprise he replied "Sure, come in on Tuesday.".
The rest is history really.. my training started with the basics. Polishing brass, cleaning the sides of keys, rejuvenating wood finishes, and buffing out high polish finishes. Little by little I was given more responsibility, and more complex tasks. Within a couple of years, I was rebuilding actions, performing high level regulations, restringing grands, and performing full refinishes.
Apprenticing and learning how to work with my hands has been one of the most fulfilling and satisfying things I have accomplished in my life. I've worked in about every facet of the piano industry now, as a technician, tuner, rebuilder, refinisher, mover, sales person.. But what I have found the most enjoyment from is sort of a culmination of all of these things. Finding used pianos, bringing them to their fullest potential acoustically, mechanicaly, and cosmetically, is immensely rewarding. Showing these pianos in our space to be discovered by piano players in their search for "the one" is what makes this all possible, and all worth it.
"This is my life's calling, and I am dedicated to providing the best possible experience to my clients with diligence, and integrity"
